OUR MISSION
Embracing and developing the cultural and linguistic strengths of the English Language Learner (ELL), the Salem-Keizer School District will provide research based instructional programs in order to best serve our ELL students. These programs will ensure that all students are provided equal access to high levels of academic content and cross-cultural competence, in order to participate as productive citizens in a multilingual and multicultural world.
FACTS
- Over 6,500 students attending Salem-Keizer Public Schools qualify for Second Language Learning Program services.
- 91% of these students speak Spanish.
- In addition to Spanish, 31 other languages are spoken by students, including (but not limited to): Russian, Marshallese, Chuukese, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, and more.
- Translated material is available in Spanish, Russian, Marshallese, Vietnamese and Chinese. Interpretation in these languages is available upon request.
OUR PROGRAMS
Following are the programs we currently have in place for cultural and linguistically diverse students:
English as a Second Language (ESL) /Sheltered Instruction (SI) Program
- Students are instructed by teachers trained to work with ELL students
- All subjects are taught in English using techniques to ensure students understand the curriculum
- Instructional Assistants who speak Spanish, Russian, English, Marshallese, and Vietnamese may be available to support students and parents
- An English Language Development class is provided for students
Early Exit Transitional Program
(Available For Spanish-Speaking Elementary Students)
- K-3 Early Exit classroom teachers are proficient in both Spanish and English
- An English Language Development class is provided for students
- Spanish-speaking instructional assistants are available to provide additional support to students and parents
- In grades 4-5 all subjects are taught in English using techniques to ensure students understand the curriculum
Two-Way Immersion (Dual Language) Program
(Available at Grant , Harritt, and Walker schools)
- Dual Language classroom teachers are proficient in both Spanish and English
- Both native Spanish-speaking and native English-speaking students are in classes together
- Students are instructed to become bilingual and biliterate
- An English Language Development class is provided for students
